The Walking Cricket group recently celebrated Bill Bain’s 90th birthday! 🎂

Andrew Shingles writes:

We won’t disclose exactly when his birthday was, but he was actually 90 when he played on Friday!

We got him a pen knife with “BILL 90” and “LEEDS U3A WALKING CRICKET” etched on it.

Digital Art

One of our members, Dave Kenny, is keen to learn more about Digital Art.

He has attended a brief introductory course at the Apple Store in Leeds and has looked at some online lessons for beginners.

He uses the “Procreate” app on his iPad Pro (See the link below).

https://help.procreate.com/procreate/handbook/introduction

He wonders if there are other members of Leeds u3a who use the above and could maybe initiate a beginner’s course - or, failing that, at least point him in the right direction.

Dave isn’t keen to start up a new group himself, but this could be the beginnings of such a venture with enough like-minded people? We are very much under-represented in the Arts department!

If you can contribute in any way, please email Dave: davidkenny53@gmail.com

The Literature Group recently celebrated the achievements of Peter Gilbert.

Jo Turner writes:

"Firstly, he was a founding member of Leeds u3a, way back in 1985.

Secondly, he ran the u3a Leeds's Literature group for many years.

Recently, he celebrated his 90th birthday! 🎂

Sadly, due to eyesight problems, he can no longer run or attend the group, but has left a great legacy.

That can be seen in the group's intelligent approach to Literature and, in particular, with their reading and understanding of the works of Shakespeare.

Peter has produced several stage versions of many Shakespeare plays, and, in fact, produced an audio version of Troilus and Cressida."

Book Group D recently celebrated Peggy Furniss’s 100th birthday! 🎂

Sue Buchan writes:

It went very well and she thoroughly enjoyed it.

The first few photos were taken at the end of the meeting, and feature our book of the month, our card to Peggy, and her Buckingham Palace card - Peggy's comment on that card was "Well he could have taken his hands out of his pockets!"

The book was 'Normal Rules Don't Apply' by Kate Atkinson. We all contribute book titles to our list, and Peggy has provided an interesting variety of titles.

Last year, she selected for us the Edwardian classic novel 'Anna Of The Five Towns' by Arnold Bennett.

This year, her selection was 'The Book Of Trespass' by Nick Hayes - a freedom-to-roam campaigning look at our extremely limited access to countryside and waterways.

Have you watched “Only Connect” on BBC TV?

A recent team on the series was from Malvern u3a. Read about their behind-the-scenes experience on this link:

An Idea…🤔

Do you know someone who could be lonely, left out or socially disconnected? It could be a neighbour, someone down the club or a friend-of-a-friend, etc.

Why not reach out and try to get them involved in Leeds u3a?

Just an idea.

Hello everyone,

Did you know that it can be fun being on our u3a Leeds Committee? Will you consider joining us?

Being on the Committee would help you influence specific events and how we run things for the benefit of our members. Our membership numbers have grown considerably over the last two years and we have space for quite a few new committee people.

The Committee meets more or less once a month, but some months we do not need to meet and we have a little holiday!

Open to all our members, but we would especially welcome those who are just into their retirement. As long as you have the ability to use email, you can cope with our communication requirements, so please consider the matter.

In the first instance, please speak to any Committee member, including me.

Thank you for your attention,

Jo (Josephine) Turner

Scam Alert 🚨

We have been contacted by a u3a who experienced a scam in which they received an email, allegedly from one of their committee members, saying that they needed to be sent money in order to send an invoice.

This was quite sophisticated and appeared to have come from another committee member.

If you receive an email like this, check the email address of the sender to make sure it is their normal email address.

If in doubt, it is best to call the person directly. All u3as are recommended to implement dual authorisation for payments.
